Money, tipping and prices

Euros, cards almost everywhere, and what things cost.

Madeira uses the euro. Cards are accepted nearly everywhere, including most cafés; a little cash helps in villages, at markets and on the country buses.

Tipping is welcome but not expected. Rounding up or leaving 5–10 % for a good meal is generous by local standards; nobody will chase you for it.

  • An espresso is about €1. A poncha €3–4 away from the tourist bars. A bolo do caco with garlic butter €2–3; filled, about €5.
  • An espetada is €12–20; a full meal with wine in a local restaurant €15–25 a head. Funchal's marina restaurants cost more. Walk five minutes uphill.
  • Tolls: none. Parking: about €2 an hour in Funchal's car parks, €16 a day at most.
  • Cash machines (Multibanco) are everywhere and do not charge; avoid the Euronet ones, which do.
