Hear how it begins

A drive west from Câmara de Lobos to the end of the old road at Paul do Mar: a fishing town named after seals, the glass floor at Cabo Girão, terraces cut by hand over five hundred years, a steam mill still crushing sugarcane, and two villages that had no road until this century. A voice in the car that knows where you are, and tells you what you are looking at.

These are the first twenty seconds of the tour's three free blocks. In the app the three play in full, and the rest of the tour starts by itself as you reach each place.

Questions about this tour

Do I need a car?

Yes. It is a driving tour, about forty kilometres from Câmara de Lobos to Paul do Mar, mostly on the expressway and then on the old coast road. Any rental car copes; go slowly on the last descent.

Where does it start, and where does it end?

It starts as you drive into Câmara de Lobos, ten minutes west of Funchal, and ends in Paul do Mar. It is one way. Coming back to Funchal is under an hour on the expressway, or carry on to the Far West tour from Ponta do Pargo.

How long does it take?

About an hour of driving. Plan on the whole day: the stops, lunch in Calheta, and the sunset at Paul do Mar at the end.

Where do we eat?

Calheta, at the fourth stop: the last place on this coast with fuel, food and a car park together. Paul do Mar at the end has honest fish if you are ready for a second lunch.

Does the driver have to touch the phone?

No. Every story plays on its own as you reach it. Mount the phone, press Begin Tour before you set off, and leave it alone until Paul do Mar.
