Hear how it begins

The wet side of the island, west to the pools. A chapel cut into a rock at a river mouth, a waterfall that frays into lace off a road the sea took back, the only black-sand beach on the north coast, a waterfall you drive under, a threshing floor with a view, and at the end a swim in pools the lava made. A voice in the car that knows where you are, and tells you what you are looking at.

Questions about this tour

Do I need a car?

Yes. About thirty kilometres from São Vicente to Porto Moniz on the ER101 and its tunnels, with one detour up the Ribeira da Janela valley on narrow mountain road. Any rental car copes; take the valley slowly and skip the waterfall in heavy rain.

Where does it start, and where does it end?

It starts as you reach São Vicente, whether you come over the mountains from the Encumeada or through the tunnel from the east, and ends at the natural pools in Porto Moniz. It is one way, west along the coast, so the pools come last and get the afternoon sun.

How long does it take?

Under an hour of driving. Plan on five hours with the village, the beach and a swim, and more if you add the caves at São Vicente or stay on in Porto Moniz.

Are the caves and the pools included?

The tour takes you to both and tells you what they are. The caves at São Vicente are a separate ticket, about eight euros, and have closed for maintenance before, so check. The main pools at Porto Moniz charge an entrance fee; the Cachalote pools next to the aquarium are free.

Does the driver have to touch the phone?

No. Every story plays on its own as you reach it. Mount the phone, press Begin Tour before you set off, and leave it alone until the pools.
