PR 14 · Madeira
Levada dos Cedros
Reopened in October 2025 after a rockslide damaged the railing. The IFCN warned of muddy and waterlogged sections when it reopened.
A wooded levada across the top of the north-west, from Fanal down to Curral Falso.
- Distance 7.2 km
- Walking time 3 h
- Highest point 1,090 m
- Difficulty Moderate
- Route One way
Official figures. Walking times are moving times: they assume you never stop.
The route
One way. The trail ends somewhere else from where it starts, so plan how you get back before you set off.
The walk
Seven kilometres of levada through some of the densest laurel forest left, between two points on the ER 209 at either end of the Fanal plateau.
It closed in September 2025 when a rockslide took out part of the protective railing, and reopened that October. The IFCN's own notice at the time warned of muddy and flooded stretches, which is the normal state of this path rather than a temporary one.
The catch is the same as the Fanal walk: both ends are on the ER 209 but they are different points, so finishing means half an hour or so of uphill road back to the car unless somebody collects you.
Pairs well with the PR 15, which continues down from Curral Falso to the coast.
Muddy and sometimes flooded. Fog is common up here. Waterproof footwear is not optional.
