Canyoning in Madeira means going down a mountain stream the way the water does: on a rope down waterfalls, on your backside down smooth rock chutes, and swimming across the pools in between. Beginner trips need no experience at all. Expect about half a day door to door, and about €65 to €70 a person for a beginner group in 2026.
In short
- No experience needed for beginner routes. The guide runs the rope.
- Jumps are always optional.
- Minimum age is 7 or 8 on beginner routes and about 12 on harder ones, depending on the company.
- Beginner about €65 to €70, intermediate about €80 to €95 (2026).
- Open all year. Heavy rain moves trips, so do not leave it to your last day.
What a morning in a canyon feels like
You are collected from your hotel or a meeting point and driven up into the hills. At the top of the stream the guide sorts out the kit: a thick wetsuit, helmet, harness and grippy canyon shoes. There is a briefing and a practice abseil on a small drop, where you learn the one move that matters: sit back into the harness and walk backwards down the rock.
Then you follow the water. Short walks in the streambed, an abseil beside a waterfall, a natural slide into a pool, a swim, another abseil. Jumps come up now and then, and every one has a way round it. The guides take photos, so leave your phone behind.
One operator puts it at five to six hours in total, of which two to three and a half are in the canyon. The rest is the drive and changing.
Is it for you?
Yes, if you are happy being wet and a bit chilly for a few hours and can walk on slippery, uneven ground. You need to be comfortable in water, although much of it is shallow.
Heights are the fear most people bring. The first abseil is the hard moment, and it lasts about a minute. After that, most nervous people say it was easier than they expected.
Be honest about the group before you book. Operators ask for good general health, and some set a weight limit (115 kg at one company). If anyone is pregnant, has epilepsy or a heart condition, ask the operator before booking. If you are unsure about a knee, a back or a grandparent, ask before paying, not at the canyon.
Levels, ages and prices
| Level | What it involves | Usual minimum age | Price per person (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner or family | Short abseils, slides, pools, optional jumps | 7 or 8 | about €65 to €70 |
| Intermediate | Taller falls, more abseils, longer in the canyon | about 12 | about €80 to €95 |
| Private | Your group alone, at your own pace | as the route | on request, noticeably more |
| Advanced | Long multi-pitch abseils, narrow gorges | adults with experience | on request |
Each company runs its own canyons, and the same level can mean a different stream from one operator to the next. Among the beginner routes on offer in 2026 are streams at Ribeiro Frio, in the laurel forest near the start of the Balcões walk, and Ribeira das Cales. Ask which canyon you are going to, how many abseils it has and how tall the biggest one is.
For children, check the rule, not only the age. One operator takes 7-year-olds if they are at least 125 cm and 25 kg; another starts at 8. A private trip suits a family with young children, because nobody waits on a stranger.
Advanced canyons are for people who already abseil confidently and have a few canyons behind them. Operators will ask about your experience before they take you.
What is included, and what to bring
Most trips include transport, a certified guide, the wetsuit and all technical gear, photos and insurance. Food, drinks and a towel are usually yours to sort.
Bring:
- A swimsuit, worn under your clothes so you can change quickly
- A towel and a full set of dry clothes, socks included
- Water and something to eat afterwards
- A hair tie for long hair, so the helmet sits properly
Leave at the hotel: rings, watches, earrings, and anything you would hate to see disappear into a pool.
Summer or winter?
It runs all year, and the season changes the trip rather than spoiling it.
- Late spring to early autumn: warmer water, gentler flow. The easiest time for beginners and children.
- Late autumn to early spring: more water after rain, louder falls, colder pools. The wetsuit copes.
Operators check the water level every day. After heavy rain a stream can rise fast, and a good company will cancel or switch canyons without argument. Book early in your stay so there is room to move. Our staying safe page explains what the island’s rain warnings mean.
The honest downsides
You will be cold at some point, usually when the group stops in the shade. Wet shoes squelch for hours. The drive up on mountain roads can upset anyone prone to car sickness. And at €65 or more a head, it is one of the pricier half days for a family of four. By the second waterfall, few people are thinking about any of that.
