Pico do Arieiro is the summit you do not have to earn: 1,818 metres up, a paved road to the top, and a car park a few minutes from the railings. From there you look along the jagged spine of the island to Pico Ruivo, and on a good morning the valleys below are full of cloud. On a poor one you see the inside of the cloud and not much else. This guide covers getting up there (including the bus most people do not know about), the walks from the top, what they cost in 2026, and how to judge the weather before you go.
In short
- The viewpoint is free and needs no booking. The PR 1 ridge walk needs a booked slot: €4.50 to Pedra Rija and back, €10.50 for the full ridge to Pico Ruivo, in 2026.
- Beyond Pedra Rija the ridge is one way, towards Pico Ruivo. Plan how you get home from Achada do Teixeira before you start.
- There is a public bus: up from Funchal at 06:00 and 13:30, down at 12:15 and 19:00 (18:00 in winter), €3.
- It is colder and windier than Funchal in every season. In summer the car park is often full before sunrise.
- Check a summit webcam, not the city forecast.
Arieiro or Areeiro?
Both. The trail (Vereda do Areeiro), the bus timetable and most official signs say Areeiro. Tour companies and plenty of maps say Arieiro. We use Arieiro here because that is what most people type, and Areeiro when we name the trail.
Getting to the top
By car
From Funchal you climb through Monte and Terreiro da Luta to the Poiso pass on the ER 103, then turn left onto the ER 202 for the last stretch to the summit. It is paved and signed the whole way; the difficulty is the gradient, the bends and a few unguarded edges, not the surface. Allow about 45 minutes from the centre of Funchal, longer in fog, which often sits on the upper road and can cut visibility to a few metres. Approaches from Santana and the east are slower. See driving in Madeira if you have not driven in the mountains here before.
Parking
We know of no charge for the car park beside the viewpoint, but read the signs when you arrive. It holds a lot of cars and still fills up: in summer it is often full before sunrise, and late arrivals end up on the verge of the ER 202 below. Outside sunrise hours on a weekday it is usually fine.
By bus
Horários do Funchal runs a dedicated service in 2026, every day except Christmas Day:
| Morning | Afternoon | |
|---|---|---|
| Funchal (cable car terminus stop) to Pico do Areeiro | 06:00, arrives about 06:45 | 13:30, arrives about 14:15 |
| Pico do Areeiro to Funchal | 12:15 | 19:00 (18:00 from 25 October) |
It stops at Monte, Terreiro da Luta and Poiso on the way. The fare is €3 each way, paid on board by cash or card, and under-sixes travel free. The bus has 31 seats; you can reserve by phone (291 705 555) between seven and two working days ahead. A small shuttle (€1.20) also loops every 15 minutes between the CAM Florestal stop further down the ER 202, the car park and the summit roundabout, from 06:40 to 12:15 and 14:10 to 19:00 (18:00 in winter). It only sets off with at least four passengers. The company can cancel in bad weather or if the road is shut.
Otherwise it is a taxi (agree the price and the waiting time before you set off), a shared transfer or a guided trip.
What is at the top
A short paved path leads from the car park to the summit platform and several railed viewpoints facing north and east over the central massif. You look along the ridge towards Pico Ruivo, down into deep valleys and, on a good day, out to the north coast.
There is a café and public toilets by the car park. Do not count on the café at dawn. The big white dome on the neighbouring rise is an Air Force radar station, fenced off, and the bus turns at the roundabout beside it.
If you arrive in fog, give it a quarter of an hour before driving away. Cloud moves fast across this summit, and it can lift while you are still deciding.
More on the viewpoint itself: Pico do Arieiro.
How long to spend at the top
For the view alone, half an hour, longer if you are waiting for a gap in the cloud. Add an hour for the Pedra Rija walk, or give the whole day to the full ridge. With the drive both ways, a look around and a coffee, a short visit from Funchal takes about two and a half hours. With Pedra Rija, three and a half.
Walks that start at Pico do Arieiro
| Walk | Distance | Time | Fee (2026) | Ends at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PR 1 to Pedra Rija and back | 1.2 km each way | about 1 h | €4.50 | Arieiro car park |
| PR 1 full ridge to Pico Ruivo | 6.1 km, one way | 3 h official, allow more | €10.50 | Pico Ruivo, then Achada do Teixeira or Ilha |
| PR 3 Vereda do Burro | about 7 km, all descent | about 2 h 40 | None | Ribeira das Cales |
| PR 3 plus PR 3.1 to Monte | 11 to 12.5 km, all descent | most of a day | None | Monte, cable car to Funchal |
PR 1 to the Pedra Rija viewpoint and back
This is the version most visitors should do. The Pedra Rija section takes you out along the start of the ridge, down rock-cut steps and along narrow crests, to a viewpoint looking back at Arieiro and ahead to Pico Ruivo. On the way you pass the Ninho da Manta viewpoint and the exposed staircase that appears in every photograph of this walk. About an hour there and back, taking it slowly.
The €4.50 ticket stops at the gate at Pedra Rija. It is checked, and people without the full-route ticket are turned back.
The full PR 1 to Pico Ruivo
The Vereda do Areeiro is 6.1 km along the backbone of the island to its highest point, Pico Ruivo, at 1,862 metres. The route in use goes through several unlit tunnels and up and down long stairways, with big drops beside the path most of the way; the eastern variant round Pico das Torres is closed. If heights bother you, this will bother you. The official time is three hours. Most people take longer.
The important part is the return. The ridge fully reopened on 1 May 2026 after the 2024 fire, and beyond Pedra Rija it is one way, towards Pico Ruivo. From the top you leave by PR 1.2, 2.8 km down to the Achada do Teixeira car park, or by the much longer PR 1.1 to Ilha. Both are included in the €10.50 ticket. The IFCN says plainly that getting back to your car is your problem, and Achada do Teixeira is a long way by road from Arieiro, so arrange a taxi or a second car before you start. Signal is patchy on the ridge.
The one-way section also closes for works and weather: in September 2026 it shut on 14 to 17 and 21 to 22 September to fit a boardwalk. The IFCN table, last updated on 14 September, still showed it closed on 1 October while the booking portal sold the one-way ticket, so check the status the day before and do not walk past a closure sign.
There is nothing on the way: no water, no café. A hut near Pico Ruivo is open some of the time. Bring a torch for the tunnels, a warm layer even in August, and more water than you think.
Downhill to Monte: PR 3 and PR 3.1 (free)
A quieter way off the mountain, and free, because the Funchal council runs both. PR 3 Vereda do Burro starts just below the summit and descends about 7 km through heather and then forest to Ribeira das Cales. From there, PR 3.1 Caminho Real do Monte continues down an old cobbled royal road to Monte (4.2 km or 5.5 km, depending on whose figure you trust), where the cable car drops you in Funchal until 17:45. It is all descent, so knees suffer. It works best if you take the morning bus or a taxi up and walk home.
Levada do Barreiro (PR 4)
PR 4 starts at Poço da Neve, an old ice house on the ER 202 below the summit. In September 2026 only part of it is passable; the IFCN publishes a map of the open section.
Sunrise, sunset or daytime?
Sunrise is why most people come. It is also the coldest, busiest and least predictable time. Madeira keeps Portuguese time while sitting well west of Lisbon, so the sun comes up late: about 7:00 at the earliest in June, after 8:00 in October and January.
Sunset swaps the crowd and the cold for a calmer hour: the ridge still turns gold, but you drive up in daylight and the car park has space. The 13:30 bus and the 19:00 return (summer timetable) also make a late-afternoon visit possible without a car. If you have one chance and the forecast is uncertain, it is the safer bet.
Daytime is fine for the view, especially early. By late morning cloud often climbs the valleys and the summit can sit inside it all afternoon.
Walkers note: SIMplifica start slots run from sunrise to sunset, so you cannot legally set off on the PR 1 in the dark.
Weather at 1,818 metres
The summit makes its own weather. It is usually around ten degrees colder than Funchal, the wind rarely stops, and in winter there can be frost and ice on the road. On many mornings the summit sits above a layer of cloud, the sea-of-clouds effect people come for. On others it sits inside it.
- Check a live webcam of the summit the night before and again when you wake up. The Funchal forecast tells you almost nothing.
- Watch for IFCN closures, especially of the PR 1 in wind.
- Dress for the top, not the bottom. See weather and what to pack.
What to bring
- A warm layer and a windproof, whatever the season
- Closed shoes, and walking boots for any of the PR 1
- A torch or headlamp for the tunnels, and for the path from the car park before dawn
- Water and food: nothing on the ridge
- Your SIMplifica booking for the PR 1, on your phone or on paper
- An offline map, because mobile signal drops in places on the ridge
Combining Arieiro with the rest of the day
On the way down, turn north at Poiso for Ribeiro Frio, where the flat Vereda dos Balcões leads in about 45 minutes to a viewpoint looking back at the peaks you have just been on. The two make an easy, very good morning. If you walked the full PR 1, you are already on the north side: Santana is below Achada do Teixeira, and the Wild North Coast drive passes through it.
The Tropi Guide app has the PR 1 and its side routes offline with your position, and tells you when a section of the ridge closes.
Questions people ask
Can you drive to Pico do Arieiro?
Yes. A paved road climbs from Funchal via Monte and Poiso to a car park beside the summit, about 45 minutes from the city. Any ordinary hire car manages it. The viewing platforms are a few minutes' walk from the car.
Do you need a ticket for Pico do Arieiro?
Not for the viewpoint, which is free. You need a booked slot to walk the PR 1: €4.50 for the Pedra Rija section and €10.50 for the full walk to Pico Ruivo in 2026. Children aged 12 and under go free but still book.
Is there a bus to Pico do Arieiro?
Yes. In 2026 Horários do Funchal runs a bus from the cable car terminus in Funchal at 06:00 and 13:30, back from the summit at 12:15 and 19:00 (18:00 from 25 October). It costs €3, paid on board, and takes about 45 minutes.
How long is the walk from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo?
It is 6.1 km and officially three hours; allow four or more with stops. Beyond Pedra Rija it is one way only, so you finish at Pico Ruivo and walk down PR 1.2 to Achada do Teixeira (2.8 km) or PR 1.1 to Ilha, then need a taxi or second car.
Is it Arieiro or Areeiro?
Both spellings are used, on signs and maps alike. Areeiro is the official form in the trail name and on the bus timetable; Arieiro is what most people search for. It is the same mountain.
