The Festival do Atlântico is Funchal’s June festival, and in 2027 its fireworks go up over the bay on Saturdays 5, 12, 19 and 26 June. The shows are set to music, last about 20 minutes, and start late in the evening (22:30 in 2026). Watching from the seafront or the hills is free.

In short

  • Fireworks on the four Saturdays of June 2027: 5, 12, 19 and 26.
  • About 20 minutes each, late evening.
  • Three countries compete. A jury and a public vote choose the winners.
  • The music plays on the seafront. On the hills you get the view but not the soundtrack.
  • Street events in the centre all month, 4 to 27 June.

What happens in June

The regional government runs the festival through most of June: street performance, circus, projections, sunset concerts and a regional arts week, spread across central Funchal. The headline is the Madeira International Fireworks Competition, in which pyrotechnic companies from three countries each get a Saturday night over the bay, with opening and closing shows around them.

The shows are piromusicais: the fireworks are designed to a soundtrack, so the bursts hit the beat. Two trophies are awarded, the Troféu do Atlântico by a jury and the Madeira Tão Tua trophy by public vote.

The 2027 Saturdays

Saturday 2027 2026, for comparison
First 5 June 6 June
Second 12 June 13 June
Third 19 June 20 June
Fourth 26 June 27 June

Dates are from the official 2026 to 2028 events calendar. In 2026 the three competing companies came from Canada, China and Ukraine and fired on the first three Saturdays from the Funchal quay, and the fourth Saturday was the closing show, out of competition, with the results. China took the jury prize and Ukraine the public vote. The countries, their order and the start time for 2027 come with the programme in spring. The last Saturday draws the biggest crowd.

Where to watch

June is the easy fireworks night. It is warm, the sky over the bay is usually clear, and there are fewer people than at New Year.

On the seafront, for the whole show. Avenida do Mar and the marina are close to the launch area and are where the speakers are, so you get fireworks and music together, as designed. It fills from about an hour before. The Pontinha pier, at the western end, shows you the bay and the city behind it, but is exposed if the wind picks up.

On the hills, for the picture. From Pico dos Barcelos, or the streets around Monte, the fireworks sit over the whole lit amphitheatre with their reflections below. You will hear almost nothing of the music. Parking at the viewpoints is tight, so arrive before dark and plan how you get down.

At a hotel. The hotels on the Lido and on the slope west of the centre face the bay. On a warm June night a terrace and a drink is a fine way to see it. Ask whether the terrace is open to guests that evening.

On a boat. Operators sail from Funchal marina on the festival Saturdays, some leaving early enough to catch the sunset first. VMT Madeira, for example, lists a trip from 21:30 to 23:00 at €40 for adults and €20 for children aged 5 to 12, with a glass of champagne. Expect a family cruise with a drink on board or a louder party boat with a bar and a DJ, better suited to adults. Book with a licensed operator at the marina, particularly for the final night. It is cooler on the water after dark than you will expect in June.

Practical notes

  • Do not drive to the seafront. Parking near the water is close to impossible on fireworks nights. Walk or take a taxi.
  • Carry a jumper. The evening breeze off the sea turns cool by the time the show starts.
  • Photograph it properly. Twenty minutes is long enough to get a good shot. Find something solid to rest the camera on and turn off the flash.
  • Let the crowd go first. The first ten minutes after the last burst are the worst for traffic and taxis. Have a drink and leave after.

The rest of June

June is one of the best months on the island: warm without August’s heat, and clear mornings in the mountains. The sea is calmer, good for whale and dolphin trips, or for snorkelling in the Garajau marine reserve east of Funchal.

At the end of the month the fishing towns celebrate São Pedro, the fishermen’s saint, around 29 June, with street parties and parades in Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava. And 1 July is Madeira Day, a regional holiday.

Before the fireworks, the Fisherman’s Quarter audio tour in the Tropi Guide app finishes on the seafront, close to where the crowd gathers.
