Madeira Carnival 2027: Parade Dates, Times and Where to Stand

Madeira Carnival 2027 runs 3 to 14 February. The float parade is on 5 and 6 February, the satirical Trapalhão on Tuesday 9 February. How to see both.

The Fisherman's Quarter

Madeira Carnival 2027 runs in Funchal from 3 to 14 February. The two things to see are the allegorical parade of floats and samba groups, which the official calendar puts on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February, and the home-made, satirical Trapalhão on Tuesday 9 February. Both are free from the pavement. Times and the route are published with the programme, usually in January.

In short

  • Events in Funchal from 3 to 14 February 2027.
  • Allegorical parade: 5 and 6 February, in the evening (20:00 in 2026).
  • Trapalhão: Tuesday 9 February, in the afternoon (16:00 in 2026).
  • Free to stand. Seats in the stands cost extra and sell out.
  • Park outside the centre and eat sonhos.

The 2027 dates

Carnival moves with Easter, which falls on 28 March in 2027, so everything comes a week earlier than in 2026.

What 2027 2026, for comparison
Street events in Funchal 3 to 14 February 11 to 22 February
Children’s and charity carnival Friday 5 February Friday 13 February
Allegorical parade Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February Saturday 14 February
Trapalhão Tuesday 9 February Tuesday 17 February

The 2027 calendar lists the big parade on two nights rather than one, and Visit Madeira describes them as two separate parades. The Flower Festival did the same in 2026, with different groups on each day. Which groups march on which night comes with the programme, so check it before you pick your evening.

The allegorical parade

This is the Carnival on the posters: floats, feathers and sequins, and samba schools from across the island, each with its own theme, its own drummers and a few hundred dancers who have rehearsed since the autumn. They move slowly along the seafront, stopping to perform, and the whole thing takes a few hours to pass one spot.

In 2026 it started at 20:00 on Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro, by the marina near the Pestana CR7 hotel, and ran along Avenida do Mar to Praça da Autonomia at the eastern end. Expect something similar, but check the 2027 map.

Where to watch it

  • Near the start, by the marina, you see the groups fresh, but the barriers are two or three people deep well before the parade begins.
  • Towards Praça da Autonomia, the crowd builds later and the dancers arrive warmed up. With children, this end gets them to the front and you home sooner.
  • In the stands. Seats are sold for the allegorical parade only, and how and where they are sold is announced with the programme. Worth it for small children, anyone who cannot stand for three hours, or photographs. Buy ahead.

The Trapalhão, Tuesday 9 February

The Trapalhão is the one Madeirans call their own. No floats, no sequins, no rehearsal. People dress as whatever annoyed them this year: a politician, a pothole, a rent rise, a hiker with a selfie stick on a closed trail. Costumes are cardboard, bin bags and paint. Some of the jokes need Portuguese. The rest you will get.

It runs through central Funchal in the afternoon, along the same seafront route as the floats (16:00 in 2026). You can watch free from the pavement, but the better way is to wear something daft and walk in it. Nobody checks who is local.

Shrove Tuesday is not a public holiday, but the regional government usually gives its services the day off: in 2026 that was the whole Tuesday and the Wednesday morning. Expect public offices to be shut and some shops to close early.

Carnival around the island

Most councils hold their own parade during Carnival fortnight, on different days so people can go to more than one. They are smaller and easier to see, and often better if you are staying outside Funchal.

If you are staying in or near Look for
Câmara de Lobos Several days of events, its own Trapalhão, and the Enterro do Osso, a mock funeral that ends the feasting
Caniço or Santa Cruz A parade through Santa Cruz town, usually with music afterwards
Porto Moniz Groups walking from the harbour to the seafront by the pools
Machico, Calheta, Ribeira Brava, Santana, São Vicente, Ponta do Sol, Porto Santo At least one street event most years

Each council publishes its dates, usually in January.

Sonhos

The taste of Carnival is sonhos, “dreams”: little balls of fried dough, airy inside, with a thread of dark mel de cana, sugarcane honey, over the top. Bakeries fry them all week. They are best warm and with a coffee, and a bag of them is the right thing to hold while you wait for a parade. More in what to eat and drink.

Before you go

  • Book your room early. Carnival fortnight is one of the busiest of the winter and prices rise with it.
  • Leave the car behind. The seafront closes, parking disappears and the roads out jam after the parade. See getting here and around.
  • Dress for standing. Shoes you can stand in for three hours and a layer for the wind off the sea. Rain is possible. See weather and what to pack.
  • Eat first. Every café near the route has a queue.
  • Pick a meeting point. Phones struggle in the crowd.

In the afternoon, before the floats roll, the seafront is calm. The Fisherman’s Quarter route follows the same stretch of water, and the Tropi Guide app has it as an audio walk that works offline.
