Madeira Flower Festival 2027: Dates, Parades and Tips

The Madeira Flower Festival 2027 runs 29 April to 30 May, with float parades on Sundays 2 and 16 May and the Wall of Hope on 1 May. How to plan it.

Doors of Funchal

The Madeira Flower Festival 2027, the Festa da Flor, runs in Funchal from 29 April to 30 May. The float parades along the seafront are on Sunday 2 May and Sunday 16 May, and the children’s Wall of Hope is on the morning of Saturday 1 May. Everything except a seat in the stands is free.

In short

  • 29 April to 30 May 2027, dates from the official events calendar.
  • Two float parades, each with its own groups: Sundays 2 and 16 May.
  • Wall of Hope on Saturday 1 May, also a public holiday.
  • Flower installations around the centre for the whole five weeks.
  • Book early for the parade weekends. The rest of May is calmer.

Flower Festival 2027 dates

This year the programme is out early. Here is the official 2027 calendar, with the day of the week added.

Times and places come with the detailed programme, normally in April. The calendar itself says it is subject to change.

Two things are new compared with before 2026. The parade now runs on two Sundays a fortnight apart, with different groups each time, so the second is not a repeat. And the flower installations, which the 2026 calendar listed only for the final days (21 to 24 May), are listed for the whole festival in 2027.

The parades

Each group spends months on its float, covered in real flowers, and brings dancers in flower costumes, its own music and its own routine. They move along Avenida do Mar in the afternoon (16:00 in 2026, 16:30 in 2023) and take a couple of hours to pass.

Which one? If you can only make one, pick by your trip, not by the programme: both have the same format. The first weekend is also the Wall of Hope weekend, so it is the busier of the two.

Where to stand. The whole route is free. The start fills first, often more than an hour ahead. Further east you find space later. There is almost no shade on the seafront, and in May the afternoon sun is strong.

Seats. Stands along the route are the only paid part of the festival. The price is set each year. In 2026 each stand belonged to one of the groups in the parade, and the groups sold the seats. Buy ahead rather than on the day.

The Wall of Hope, Saturday 1 May

Early in the day, schoolchildren from Funchal walk up with a flower each and fix it to a wall, until the flowers make a single picture: the Muro da Esperança, a wish for peace. In 2026 the children gathered at the Jardim Municipal at 09:30, walked from Avenida Arriaga at 10:00 to Praça do Município, in front of the town hall, and it was over by about 13:00. It is the most local thing in the festival, and a nice reason to be out early on a bank holiday.

Flowers on any day

You do not need a parade to see the festival. On an ordinary weekday morning in May:

  • Walk Avenida Arriaga. In 2026 it had carpets of petals laid on the pavement (running on to Largo do Corpo Santo in the old town) and festival stalls on the central strip. Carpets are best in their first days and early in the morning, before sun and feet get to them.
  • See the Flower Exhibition. In 2026 the 71st edition filled a pavilion in Largo da Restauração, beside Avenida Arriaga, open 10:00 to 23:00.
  • Look for the installations. In 2027 they stay up for the whole festival.
  • Buy a strelitzia. The orange and blue flower on every Madeiran postcard is sold boxed for travel and survives the flight home.

Before ten the centre is quiet. Cruise passengers arrive mid-morning.

Planning the trip

  • Rooms. Parade weekends fill Funchal. If the centre is full, stay along the coast in Câmara de Lobos or Caniço and come in by bus.
  • No car on parade days. Avenida do Mar closes and the streets around it jam. See getting here and around.
  • Rain. Bring a jacket, not an umbrella. Delays are more likely than cancellations.
  • Sun. Water and sun cream for an afternoon on the seafront.
  • Use the weekdays. Between the parade weekends, trails and viewpoints are quieter than the town. Our crowds page has more.

May is a good month everywhere on the island, with agapanthus and hydrangeas starting along the roads. The Wild North Coast drive passes a cliff covered in roses and the gardens of the thatched houses at Santana.

In town, the Doors of Funchal walk starts a few streets from Avenida Arriaga, and the Tropi Guide app has it as an audio tour that works offline.

Questions people ask

When is the Madeira Flower Festival 2027?

From 29 April to 30 May 2027, according to the official events calendar. The float parades are on Sunday 2 May and Sunday 16 May.

Is the Flower Festival parade free?

Yes. Standing along the route costs nothing. Only seats in the stands are ticketed, and the price is set each year.

What is the Wall of Hope?

A morning ceremony on the first Saturday, 1 May in 2027, when Funchal schoolchildren each place a flower on a wall as a call for peace. Free, and very local.

What happens if it rains on parade day?

Wet weather tends to delay things rather than cancel them. Bring a light rain jacket, not an umbrella, which blocks everyone behind you.

Do I need to book a hotel early for the Flower Festival?

For the two parade weekends, yes. Funchal is full. Book as early as you can, or stay in a town along the coast and come in by bus.
